October is the month of the Rosary,
and October 7th is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The Rosary will be
recited each Sunday of October, after the 12 noon Mass, at the statue of Our
Lady on the Church grounds.
The purpose of the Rosary is to help keep in memory certain principal events
or mysteries in the history of our salvation. Also, as the Rosary is prayed,
we thank and praise God for the important moments in our salvation's
history.
There are fifteen mysteries reflected upon in the Rosary. These are divided
into the five JOYFUL MYSTERIES: The Annunciation; The Visitation;
The Birth of the Lord; The Presentation in the Temple; and the Finding in
the Temple. The Joyful Mysteries are usually said on Mondays and
Thursdays.
The second set of five mysteries are the SORROWFUL MYSTERIES: The
Agony in the Garden; The Scourging at the Pillar; The Crowning with Thorns;
Jesus Carries his Cross; and The Crucifixion. These mysteries are
usually said on Tuesdays and Fridays of the week.
The third set of mysteries are the GLORIOUS MYSTERIES: The
Resurrection; The Ascension of Our Lord; The Descent of the Holy Spirit; The
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin; Coronation of the Blessed Virgin as Queen
of Heaven. These mysteries are usually said on Saturday and Sunday of
the week.
How does a person say the Rosary?
You begin (1) by making the Sign of the Cross, and then, holding the
crucifix, you recite the Apostles' Creed. Next (2) say an Our
Father on the large bead; (3) a Hail Mary on each of the three
small beads; (4) and a Glory be to the Father on the chain between
the third small bead and the medal.
You then (5) announce one of the five mysteries, moving around the beads. At
the beginning of each decade, you state the intentions for which you are
praying that decade; you state what the particular mystery is, and say an
Our Father. Then (6) you commence saying the prayers while thinking
about that mystery; one Hail Mary on each of the ten small beads.
Then (7) say one Glory be to the Father on the chain between the last
small bead and the next large bead. After you have said the Glory be to
the Father, you say the Fatima prayer: O my Jesus, forgive us
our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to heaven,
especially those in most need of thy mercy.
For the next decade (8) and each subsequent set of mysteries (9), you
continue in the same manner as before. On completion of the fifth decade
(10), you recite the Hail, Holy Queen: Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of
Mercy, our life, our sweetness and hour hope! To thee do we cry, poor
banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and
weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine
eyes of mercy toward us, and after this exile, show unto us the blessed
fruit of thy womb Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! V.
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of
the promises of Christ.
The following prayer is also sometimes said: O God, whose only begotten
Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards
of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these
mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate
what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our
Lord. Amen.

How to Pray Rosary
The Rosary is a
combination of vocal and mental prayer on the mysteries of our redemption.
It is composed of fifteen decades of mysteries and these are divided into
the Five
Joyful Mysteries, the five
Sorrowful Mysteries and the five
Glorious Mysteries.
Pope John Paul II in his apostolic letter "The Rosary of the Virgin Mary",
released on 16th October 2002, has proposed that we add five more decades
called "Mysteries
of Light", to the Rosary. In these mysteries we contemplate the
public ministry of Jesus.
The
Pope has suggested the following order for the recitation of the Rosary
